Yes, I’m a Hockey Mom! #WeAllPlay @CanadianTire Twitter Chat

It took me a long time to accept that I was a hockey mom. I tried to convince my son to love tennis, but his heart was always with Canada’s national sport – hockey. While he does play tennis very well, he is passionate about hockey. My DH is an avid recreational player. Having grown up in Montreal, he played most of his hockey on outdoor rinks. So you could say it runs in the family.

I didn’t grow up playing hockey, and I didn’t know any girls who did. Only boys played hockey. But from the beginning my son had girls playing on his teams. And while they were the minority, his exposure to seeing girls play as well as the boys was such an amazing experience. In some instances, the girls were among the best players on the team.

Hockey has provided so much more that I ever imagined. My son has learn teamwork, and discipline. Sometimes he’s had a practice when he would have preferred to play video games. He has basked in the joy of victory and felt the frustration of defeat. He has forged new friendships, and has developed a confidence that has help him break out of his shyness.

Hockey gives him structure, a purpose and a goal to strive for. These elements are so important and the benefits go far beyond exercise. This is a life-long hobby, something he can play the rest of his life, much like his father.

I’m an advocate of encouraging kids to find the sport they love, and let them play it. Some of my son’s fondest memories are of playing shinny on an outdoor rink with his friends. He loves it, and he feels like he has a bond with kids he plays with.

I encourage parents to let their children explore sports. The benefits far out-weigh the challenges. I never thought I would be a hockey mom, but I must say I’m pretty proud to be one!

I’m excited to be participating in the #WeAllPlay Twitter Party with Olympians Hayley Wickenheiser and Meaghan Mikkleson to find out what playing hockey has meant to them.
