No longer a kid’s meal kid

What’s wrong with the kid’s meal? This was a common topic of discussion during our recent family vacation.

The first morning of our trip was rainy and cool, so we decided to treat ourselves to a warm breakfast. Not really paying attention, we all ordered off the main menu – and to my astonishment, we were served with monster plates full of enough food to last us all day long. I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised at our very ‘large’ bill.
So for both health and financial reasons, we decided to search out the kids menu whenever it was offered. But this wasn’t too easy to do. What once would have enchanted and impressed my son now served to insult and demean him, ordering off the kids menu was entirely offensive. First, there were fewer options than on the adult menu; second, there were goofy, silly handouts and giveaways and; third, it was discrimination, he couldn’t wait to be 13, when he would be too old to eat off the kids menu.
For the most part we managed to stick with the kids menu as some clever restaurants offered ½ orders of mains for the kids. There was one restaurant that had pizza with duck meat as a topping option on the adult menu, so we caved – he really wanted to try duck meat.

The final insult came while we dined at a steak house that delivered his meal in a bright red paper cardboard truck. Fortunately, the food was cradled in wax paper, so it was fairly easy to extract the food from the offending vessel. However, when it came time for dessert, he was very happy to eat all three of his mini ice cream cones. Hey, maybe kid’s meals aren’t so bad after all!
