Popcorn is a whole-grain food (just don’t tell anybody)

popcornIt’s a new year, well, it’s early in the new year and I’m still determined to keep us eating healthy.  I’ve been using microwave popcorn as an alternative to chips and other fried snacks, but sometimes it is hard to get the exact flavour I’m looking for.  Sometimes it is too buttery, and other times, like cardboard, often it is too salty.

A few weeks ago, I dug out the air popper I got for my wedding (yes, we actually registered for it and got it), so it is really old.  I wasn’t sure if it would even work, but I had some organic popcorn and thought I would give it a try.  And, after a few minutes of hesitation, I actually started to see the popcorn popping.  In fact, it all started streaming out into the bowl, and then, quickly, much of it burst onto the counter and floor, as the delayed unpopped kernals that travelled out of the popper exploded unexpectedly in the bowl.

Ok, so there may have been improvements in air popper technology over the past 15 years, but one thing I discovered is that the air popped tastes better than the microwaved stuff.  It is cruncher, chewier and I can control the salt.

We do prefer ours with some melted butter, but overall, the final result is healthy.  And guess what, nobody around here knows that.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the convenience of the microwave type, but I much prefer the old fashioned, unadorned do it your self type.  And, it is way cheaper – even buying organic kernals works out to a very affordable snack.
